email showing odd symbols when I type

I replied to an email today and when I started typing, a "dot" or separated
each word. Furthermore, when I hit enter to start a new sentance, a backwards
"P" type symbol appeared on each line. I don't know how to clear this text.
It only seems to happen when I try to respond to an email.
