I try to open Outlook from the start menu in Windows XP. the last time i
tried, a message appeared that said "your attempt was unsuccessful. Do you
want to open Outlook in safe mode?" I clicked yes, the program opened and I
was able to use it. However, after a while, it shut down, with a message
that .pst files had been altered. Another attempt just now resulted in the
message that the .pst files are in use by another application. Could this be
related to the indexing application in aol?

It could be. Use Task Manager to see if there are any other instances of
the OUTLOOK.EXE process running as well.
