In Microsoft Outlook 2003, with a message closed, I can see the navigation
pane on the left-side but when I open the message, it opens full screen and I
can no longer see the navigation pane. Is there a setting I can change to be
able to see both?

When you open a message, click the little "oblong" symbol in the top
right-hand corner of the message, that should enable you to see the sides
and corners sufficiently to drag the size of the message to a smaller area.
Outlook /should/ remember the size next time you open a message...
