If I either save a file as an .MSG or open an email sent with an .msg
attachemet I can open it once but if I close it and try to re open it I get a
message it is already in use.   I have to completly shut down outlook and re
open to open the file again.  How can i fix this so I can open it without
having to close outlook?

Get rid of Google Desktop.
Or update it!

Where would google desktop reside?  Its not an "Add on" in my explorer and it
is not in in my "Add Remove Programs"

Then perhaps you do not have Google Desktop installed.  To find out
what running process has a open handle on a file which prevents you
from deleting it, try the following utilities:

SysInternals 'handle' utility
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx
(Microsoft bought SysInternals)

Win2K Resource Kit 'oh' (open handle) utility
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/ResKit/win2000/
(for NT-based versions of Windows; you did not mention WHICH version
of Windows that you use)
