I've tried multiple times to get this to work to no avail.  Outlook 2007
displays a message on receiving new email "cannot reply to message" rules
error.  Outbox always has an unsent message.  What am I doing wrong.

Well, honestly, trying to do it in Outlook is what you're doing wrong.  Talk
to your mail provider and see if they have an Out of Office/Vacation type
feature.  Doing it in Outlook means that a)  Your computer will need to stay
running, b)  Outlook will need to stay running and c) your Internet connection
will need to keep working.

Most mail providers have this sort of functionality and won't require you
to waste the energy with your computer.

Leaving my computer on is not a problem, it never gets turned off.  According
to the "help" in Outlook 2007 this should work.  This is the very feature I
bought Outlook for.

That's the feature you bought Outlook for?  I'm pretty sure a number of free
clients allow for this sort of functionality.  Heck OE/Windows Mail, which
comes with the OS, has that feature.

That, and, we could spend a number of hours trying to make this work and
failing, or you could take 5 minutes to look at your ISP and set it up and
have it work.  As for your computer never being turned off... What about
when the power fails?  Does it automatically log in and does Outlook start
automatically?  Will it boot up if power cuts and turns back on?  Not all
computers do.

But, sure, lets spend the time to get yours to work.

Start with this.

If you start a new message using the template you've created for the rule
and hit send, does it send or does it sit in the outbox?
What's the exact syntax of the error you receive?

Unless you tell us what you ARE doing (in detail), we can't tell you what's
WRONG with it.

I have followed the instuctions from the Outlook 2007 help, line for line.
From creating a message template, to creating a new rule.  Everything is
exactly like the help says, except I never get the dialog box informing me
that this rule will be applied to every message received.  After all of this,
I always have an unsent message in the Outbox (my reply), is this right?
Everytime I receive a message I get a dialog box that says Rule error (cannot
reply to message).

Once again, you're not including the information we need.  For example, you
have not posted the EXACT rule that you have created.  Also, there's no
indication you read the web site whose link I included.

The website you listed has the exact same information as the help in Outlook
2007.  As I wrote before I have followed those instructions exactly, word for
word.  I see no reason to type all of this out in a message to you.  I am
creating the message template and rule exactly as its shown in the help, but
it does NOT work.  If I were deviating in any way from what is in the help
info I could understand the need for additional information.

And I see no reason to continue with the discussion.

So you say, with no proof.

Obviously you wish to be of no help.  How do I prove to you that I am
entering everything as the help says.
