It's a great time to turn on logging then to see what is going on during the
send/receive process. Note that for POP3 accounts you'll need to enable
"leave a copy on the server for x days" if you want to download your emails
to multiple machines.
You still failed to mention your Outlook version.
FWIW; both ZoneAlarm and AVG are applications I personally avoid as they
tend to cripple more than they offer solutions for.

I have Outlook 2003 SP3.
I have leave a copy enabled. I agree with you about Zone & AVG but am
loathed to leave my security to XP and if not AVG as a virus checker; what??
As for logging? You got me there....do I need a checked shirt and axe for
that :-)

For info about enabling logging see;

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA011742661033.aspx
The checked shirt and axe might be a good idea too; it will get you from
behind the computer ;-)
I've never had issues with only running the XP firewall but I have to
mention that I was also behind a router. If you are as well, you should be
fine with only the XP firewall. You wouldn't directly need protection for
outgoing ports on a home PC as it means you would have been infected with
something already ;-)
As for the virus scanner; I personally like McAfee VirusScan Enterprise. I'm
not sure if their consumer products are of a similar level. NOD32 is also a
good product and I have positive experiences with using that in home
configurations.

Ok I found and have started logging, I also found where it hides the file and
have looked at it but it doesn't help me, looking closely at the entries
nothing stands out as wrong, it all looks ok, but the truth is I don't really
understand most of it. I can attach a copy if you think it will help.
