Can't delete mail hung up in Outbox

tried to send mail with large attachment that is now hung up in 'outbox'.
When trying to delete says " Outlook trying to send message" and won't allow
'delete" function. Ususlly have to open up the message inorder to dlete.
using Outlook 2003 Pro version. How can i delete this - tried everything.
