Purge not deleting marked items in 2007 IMAP

Just converted gmail from pop to imap.  Deleting in All Mail folder produces
the desired strikethrough.  Edit>purge>all marked produces the "are you sure"
window and then triggers a send/receive.  Strikethrough item shows through
all of this.  Then get a "renewing cache" cycle and the strikethrough is
removed with the item remaining as it was when I started.  Any suggestions?

That's a gmail "feature", not an Outlook feature.  You can do nothing about
it from the Outlook side.

Not sure I understand.  Outlook IMAP instructions and posts on this site both
say edit>purge permanently deletes the time from both outlook and the IP
server.  Are you saying that doesn't work with gmail?

Oops.  Meant "deletes the item."

In any folder by "All Mail" it works.  It does not work in "All Mail" and
it's because gmail won't honor the purge request in that folder.
