Windows Vista Home Professional.  Just converted gmail from pop to
imap.  Deleted items in All Mail show the strikethrough.  Execute
edit>purge all files.  Outlook executes a send/receive.  Item remains
in All Mail showing strikethrough.  Outlook then executes a
"synchronize cache."  The item remains in All Mail and the
strikethrough is removed.  Have also set to purge when file changed,
same result.  Any suggestions on where to go from here?

The gmail "All Mail" folder is an artificial construct and gmail does not
honor the purge command for anything in it.  It's not a problem with Outlook
but with Google's IMAP implementation.
