Thanks for suggestion but disconnected McAfee from Outlook and problem still
there.
Outgoing server ISP different from that providing Internet access (BT
Broadband).
I have 2 accounts - 1 btinternet address and other for business address
(hosted by my web designer). I can still send via the btinternet account (so
not a disaster but not professional!). All account settings are still as they
were when everything was working well.

Apparently your web designer has modified the security settings on their
server. Contact them if remotely using their SMTP server is still supported
or simply configure the SMTP account of BT on your other account as well.

If you are still struggling with this issue then you are not alone- there
are lots of us who have been affected by this BT cock-up.
BT do not have any idea how to solve the problem - they just keep blaming
the users- but there is an explanation and solution here:

It is tricky and you need to use the additional info in the link shown on
the page. But as you will see from the expressions of gratitude in the
comments, it does work.
