Why does it take so long to open email?

I recently archived some email folders to reduce the pst file size (was
1.5G). Now it takes 30 seconds to open an email and the same to open a new
one.

I ran the compact pst option and the file size reduced to 900MB but it still
takes the 30 seconds to open an email.

Any suggestions? running Outlook 2000 SR-1.

It was fine, quick opening, before I archived.

From where are you opening your mail - your PST file, your archive
file, or from an IMAP account?

If it's a PST file, then maybe defragmenting may help (while Outlook is
closed).

From another post regarding slow performance, it suggested renaming or
deleting the outcmd.dat file. Outlook will re-create automatically. I did
that and it now functions as I would expect. I also did a defrag of my C
drive. My pst file is on a network so I don't think that really had any
affect.

If your pst is located on a network you should be advised MS does not
support such use as it can lead to corruption of the data file
