Why is Outlook 2003 using the 'pop' server for 'sending' now?  Shouldn't be
using the 'smtp' server?  How do I get Outlook to use the 'smtp' server?  All
was working correctly until I installed these updates-see below:

Assuming you are wondering about the display text of "Task
'pop-server.'domain'.rr.com ", thats normal.  Outlook always uses the name
of the account.

As for the error message, it just means that the SMTP server wants you to
authenticate first to send e-mail.  This could range anywhere from checking
your POP3 mail first to ensuring that you have configured the mail account
in Outlook to authenticate to the SMTP server using the same user
id/password you use to access the pop3 server.
