My emails wont show up unless I hit the send/recieve button

I have desktop notification set up, but my emails won't show up now, unless I
hit the send/receive button.  I was getting the envelope on the toolbar, and
the little box would pop up, but for some reason it has disappeared.

A wild guess; you've marked Outlook to work Offline. File-> Work Offline
