For no good reason I can think of, when I have outlook open and idling it
crashes after a few minutes. I also lost the ability to use outlook express
newsgroups.  When I open newsgroups it says connected, then a message comes
saying the connection has been terminated by the server. I use verizon fios
and they say it is an outlook problem. This started happening a couple of
weeks ago. I checked all my installed programs nothing seems new that would
have been installed to cause the crashing.

I use win xp home
Office 2003

Are there any Office or Outlook related errors recorded in the Application
Event Viewer? Note the eventID number and source.
Also, check your Outlook Add Ins and COMs. Not all are compatible with
Outlook, especially newer versions.
Have there been updates to your operating system, Office, antivirus engine,
firewall, etc.? Do you have antivirus configured to actively scan incoming
and outgoing emails?
