hot to stop messages from changing status to 'opened'

Outlook 2003. Messages come in as unopened but change to opened within
minutes. Thought Verizon wireless synch was the cause but took that out of
the equation.

It could be your antivirus or -spam scanner too.

In addition to Brian's suggestion on what to look for, also check tp see if
you have autopreview on as well as marking a message read after X seconds. As
email arrives and is autopreviewed, it may mark itself as read if that option
is selected.
