I have a very large OUTLOOK 2007 PST file after combining several files,
it is over 4GB in size (I have had big ones before and been able to sort
them out).
I keep getting "message interface" errors.
I can't run archive, compact, open another PST file, export to another
PST file.
I have run SCANPST but still can't fix the file.
I can read messages and I can send messages.
I thought of starting a new PST file and open this one at the same time.
Any suggestions of any other ways or repairing the file?

Was the pst file created in Outlook 2007? Can you open it in outlook? Do
you still have the psts that were used to create this larger file?

Yes only been used with OUTLOOK 2007.
My laptop was out of action for a few weeks so I used the desktop for
downloading mail.
I can open the file then read, send and receive mail but cannot archive,
compact, open a second data file.
I have transferred the PST file from the laptop across to the desktop
and using that OK but would like to recover some mail from the old file.
I will have PST files that have the much old mail so will be able to
combine that or at least keep as an archive file.
Just very annoying that I cannot open it in a way that lets me archive
or copy message or folders across to another file.
SCANPST runs and does not indicate that it has failed but it does not
correct the problem.

Create a new unicode .pst file and set it as default with following steps:
1.Start Outlook, Go to Tools → Options → On Mail setup tab click E-mail
accounts button.
2.Now click add on Data Files tab.
3.Select Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst) and click OK.
4.Select a new location for .pst file and clock OK twice.
5.Click on Set as Default. If this is the default e-mail delivery location,
then You will receive the below mentioned message.
“You have changed the default deliver location for your e-mail. This will
change the location of your Inbox, Calendar, and other folders. These changes
will take effect the next time you start Outlook.”
Click OK.
6.Select the .pst file which was identified in step 2 and then click Remove
button to remove the local .pst file from profile.
7.Click on Yes, click Close and OK to close all the dialog boxes.
8.Exit and Restart Outlook.
After creating new .pst file import all the data from the old file to the new
.pst file. If still after using these steps you found any issue in Outlook
then try a well featured PST Recovery tool which could deeply scan the PST
and fix any kind of PST file related issue. You can get complete information

It is not a very issue. Inbox repair tool or scanpst.exe is unable to repair
pst file whose size is more than 2GB or 4GB. In this situation, first of all
you need to split the pst file in small size after that try to repair pst
file using scanpst.exe. If it fails to fix then try some best and effective
third party outlook pst repair tool to fix this error.
