I have document templates which contain field codes, eg
date. Suddenly (and coincidentally after running word
updates?) when I open the document the field format
appears instead of the text, eg {DATE\@"MMMMdYYYY"}
instead of the current date.  Although I can toggle to
show the date, when I print, the surrounding text is
affected, eg extra para returns put in, rows repeated etc.
I have tried creating new templates but the problem is
still there.

Alt+F9 to toggle field codes.

You need to check two settings: Tools | Options | View --> Field codes and
Tools | Options | Print | Include with document --> Field codes. Normally,
most people work with both of these settings turned off (unchecked).

The Tools/View/Field codes tip worked.  Thanks very much

Hi Kate,

If you turn off the display of field codes under Tools>Options>View, do you
still get the problem?  If so, what version of Word and what update are you
referring to?

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested.  Unsolicited questions forwarded
directly to me will only be answered on a paid consulting basis.

Hope this helps
