After numbering pages satisfactorily in my document,
suddenly the pages are gone and in their place
is: "{PAGE }."  I can't get rid of it.  I have deleted it
from Auto Text, and from Heading, but it keeps poping
back in when I try to insert numbers.  I would appreciate
any suggestions.

Joe,

toggle your field codes {Page} ON and OFF by clicking Alt
F9. This is the field code for page numbering. If you want
page numbers in your document, these must be there. The
toggle enables you to see the content of the code.
