You can use one of several narrow spaces available in some fonts. Or you can
use Condensed font formatting for the space.

Or if you are talking about vertical half-spacing, you can set paragraphs to
have 1.5 line spacing, or you can raise or lower text using the settings on
the Character Spacing tab of Format | Font.

I'm trying to get:   Pre-wire: $  100.00
                                Trim: $1,000.00
                         Sub-total: $1,100.00
                                 Tax: $     77.00
                               Total: $1,177.00

So the colons, $, comma and decimal points line up vertically.  With a
typewriter you could half space a make the "columns" line up correctly.  I
was wondering if this could be done in Word without have to set up tables.

Marc,
You could use tabs to do this, you will need a right aligning tab for
Pre-Wire and Trim, then a left tab for the $ signs, last a decimal tab for
your amounts.
See here for an explanation on how to do it:

Use a decimal tab to line up the decimal points.
