Indentation and tab markers on horizontal ruler don't snap

I am using MS Word 2000 on a computer with Windows XP
Professional operating system. My preferred measurment
unit for the horizontal rules is inches. In the past,
whenever I openned a new word document, I was able to get
the Indentation and tab markers on the horizontal rulers
to snap to the 1/8" tick marks. On this computer though,
whenever I open a new word document, these markers on the
horizontal ruler don't snap to any of the tick marks.
If I open a document sent to me by somebody else where
the markers snap, then it will always snap, but I can't
turn on the snapping feature on a new document.
I would appreciate any help from anyone on this issue.

Al,

Try opening the Drawing Toolbar, click on Draw>Grid>Snap object to grid.

Greg,

I tried your suggestion, but the "Snap object to grid"
was already checked off. Any other suggestion would be
appreciated.

You need to set the *size* of the grid to reflect the snap you want to
achieve.

Graham,

Thanks a lot. It worked. I don't know how my default grid
size was changed to begin with. I would have never
thought the grid applies to the ruler in addition to the
drawing space.

Regards,
Al Gary

Are you still seeing inches on your ruler or are you seeing some other weird
scale?

Terry,

I am still seeing inches on the ruler. This problem does
not seem to be related to the measurment unit on the
ruler.

I believe that you need to force a save to normal.dot to save this setting.
The setting for the 'snap to grid' is on the drawing toolbar: go to Draw,
Grid and set the grid to the correct measurements. However, to make it stick
you need to open normal.dot, change the setting, and then make some other
edit change that will force Word to 'Save Changes to the Global Template'.
