Cursor Disappearing Act

In Word 2000 as you type in any document (new or saved) every 10 seconds or so the cursor disappears and the upper left corner of the document greys.  This lasts about 2-3 seconds.  Great annoyance - any suggestions?  It is not autosave.  Thanks.

This is usually a symptom that Speech Recognition is active.
