I click: Insert / Picture / From file/ and 'my pictures folder' window pops
up.

I have 'all' images located within Photos (G) drive.

Is there a way to set the drive G as default vice 'My Pictures'?

Thanks for all or any replies.  8^)

You could try Tools->Options->File Locations.  Then select "Clipart
pictures"  (Location is probably blank ... at least it was in my Word
2000) and click Modify. Navigate to your choice of drive and folder.
Click OK and OK again.

The Clipart pictures location is a little quirky.

If this path is blank then Word will remember the last folder you
selected. If there is a path then Word will default to the folder
specified each time you use the Insert/Picture/From File command.

If you always use the same folder then this isn't a problem. But if
you're like me and create several subfolder under a specific folder
then returning to the parent folder each time can be a pain.

What I do is leave the Clipart pictures location blank and use TweakUI
to modify the location of "My Pictures" folder. This way I can have a
default folder *and* retain the ability return to the last folder I
selected.

Note: If you have a path set for Clipart pictures and use Word
2002/2003 the only way I know of to delete the Clipart pictures path
is to delete/rename the "PICTURE-PATH" value is in the Registry under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options
or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

Otherwise the path can be deleted in the Modify dialog box.

This is the first time I've seen this spelled out, and it explains why this
feature behaves differently for Cindy (and others) than for me. It's
interesting that My Pictures doesn't seem to be set as the default in
out-of-the-box Word, yet that is what is set in my copy of Word. Since I
know I have never specified it, this must have been part of the Dell
installation of Office XP.

Hi Suzanne,

This one drove me nuts until I figured it out! Sometimes Word would
remember the last folder and other times it would maintain the default
folder. (In hindsight it was due to renaming the Word\Options Reg key
for various reasons and forgetting to delete the new key and rename
the old one back.)

To my knowledge the Clipart pictures path has never been set in a
default Word installation. I'd have to agree with you that Dell must
have used an image that had the path set.

So many thanks to you all.
The registry now shows G:Photos as the path to images.  8^)

Used Hilary's method then moved to Beth's regedit check and there it showed
G:Photos as the path.

Lets hope this 'sticks'  Have copied your info to my Word Tips.

Again, Thank you all.

Not to mention that if one wants something from the Clipart
collection, one uses Insert->Clipart.  Yet the "Clipart" in "File
Locations" doesn't seem to relate to it!  Perhaps it would be less
confusing had MS named it "My Pictures"?!

Yes, but only during the same session of Word (at least in 2000), does
it not?

Unless I misunderstood, I think the OP was trying to change the
default for Insert/Picture From File from "My Pictures" to a folder on
her G: drive.  But I definitely see your point!

Now *that's* a great idea!  Thanks, Beth :)

Yes, that is the part that is most deceptive. Most people are loath to
change the path for "Clip art" because they don't realize that it affects
Insert | Picture | From File rather than Insert | Picture | Clip Art.

I couldn't agree more!

Correct. The last folder selected is a 'per session' setting and is
the same through Word 2003 as well.

No, you didn't misunderstand. I was fairly certain your advice was
what the OP was looking for (which it was) - just wanted to throw in
some additional information on the behavior of the Clipart pictures
path. :-)

Nothing to add, but I'm leaving this in, in the hope that any lurking
MS developers will ... uh ... get the picture ;)

And I'm glad you did!
