I just started having this problem.  When I highlight a
word and try to replace it with a letter, the text does
not ger replaced, the letter gets appended to the text.

I re-installed Office xp Professional and the problem
persists.

Any Ideas?

On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, make sure "Typing replaces selection" is
checked.
