I have a user who is trying to use customize numbering. I
don't know what she has changed but if she hits the tab
key to demote nothing happens.

This is the same for built in numbering also. She can go
into outline view and demote, but her tab key doesn't do
anything.

She uses Word XP on a Windows XP system.

Any suggestions?

Gladys,
There is  a setting in "Auto-correction options" which should be activated.
In the menu "tools" - choose auto-correction options - click on the tab
"Auto format as you type". In the dialogue in the last section check the
second box and you should be allright.
