How do you open an Excel doc in Word?

In previous versions I was able to open an excel document
in word fairly easily. I would just select the file
type .xls when I went to open a document, and it would
bring the excel file into word as a table. Now in Office
2003 with Windows XP it does not even give me an option
to open an .xls file. I have to save the excel file as
a .txt file and then open it, but then it will not come
in as a table. Any ideas?

There's been some suggestion in an earlier thread that this requires
installing the appropriate file converters. If you didn't install all the
available converters when you installed Office 2003, try again.

Select your excel File and Import the file

I've been a user of Office user for many years and don't recall ever being
able to open Excel with Word or vice versa. You can use the Insert, Object
to insert an Excel-like Spreadsheet or Graph - and this opens part of Excel
to do the work inside Word, but you cannot just open an .xls using Word.

In that case, it must be possible but how?

She either has installed filters I haven't or she has them left over from a
previous version. We haven't yet figured out which (because I've been too
lazy to investigate further).

The conversion requires a converter that was provided in some earlier
version or converter pack, but which has been removed (along with some
others) from Word in the recent rash of security updates. If you wish to
risk continuing to use the converter (and it will provide a security warning
if you do - though the risks are minimal provided) then you can download it
from my web space. Note this file is not linked from the site.

Thanks for the clarification. It is something I have never wanted to do -
but it is useful to know that I can.
