When I print a word document with page numbers, the numbers do  not
print.  Instead I get this

                {page  }

What can I change (select or unselect) to get page numbers to print?

TIA

That works but now the displayed page on the monitor has the {PAGE }
showing instead of the page numbers.  It seems to be just one thing
after another.  Fixing one problem just uncovers another.

I have a Word 97 instruction book but it is silent about this problem.
My present version is 10.0.2627.0 which came with MS Office XP
Professional for Service Pack 2 (I do have SP2, BTW).

For this you do need Alt+F9 (or clear the box for "Field codes" on the View
tab of Tools | Options).

Thanks Suzanne.  Clearing the 'Field Codes' box on the View Menu did it.
 Alt-F9 does nothing for me.  When do you use (apply) it?  What needs
to be on the monitor when you invoke it?

Alt+F9 toggles the display of fields from field codes to field results or
vice versa.
