How do I automatically update autonumbered heads?

A document that is already correctly autonumbered using 1 head, 2 head,
etc., but now need to add a new heading 2 and need the remaining heads
to automatically update the following style.

(ie- heading 2 will become heading 3 automatically).????

Thanks - sorry if I'm not explaining this very well.

Hi Teri

not sure if i'm understanding you correctly, do you want to demote the
current level heading 2 to a 3 (and 3 to a 4 etc)
if so the easiest way i've found is to switch into Outline view (view /
outline view)
show up to level 2 only
then click in the words (don't select) for the first level 2 heading you see
and click the demote icon
- this will demote the 2 to a level 3 heading & any 3s to a 4 etc
click on the next level 2 & press the F4 key to repeat the process for that
section
select / F4 for the rest

- do this on a copy of your document (just in case)

Hope this helps
Cheers

If you have set up your numbering correctly, this will happen automatically,
but I suspect you haven't set up your numbering correctly. It sounds as if
you are using Heading 1 for your first heading, Heading 2 for the second,
and so on. This is not the way they're meant to be used. You're meant to use
Heading 1 for all Level 1 subheads, Heading 2 for the next level (if any),
and so on. As for the numbering, see
