Removing strange line of dots

I cannot explain why, but episodically in a long document I've written
appears a line of tiny dots across a page. They resemble some sort of
page break symbol to me. I can move the lines up or down the page
about one line, but can't get rid of them. When In the past, when I
used Word Perfect, there was a command to make all the formatting
symbols appear at the bottom; then you could at least figure out what
the heck was going on. I'm using Microsoft Office 2000 and can't find
such a command. BTW, they print out when the pages are printed (I'd
hoped they were just some symbol that wasn't really part of the text.)

This is a 250 page document, and I hate the idea of having to cut and
paste most of the thing to eliminate these things. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
