I've been trying to scan a document , which has line and columums, also check
boxes to fill out (employment application) into MS Word. When it appears on
the screen  the line are missing. Please advise.

That would be a limitation of the OCR rather than a problem with Word. Check
the options associated with which OCR you are using.

Try to send scan to pdf format instead of sending to MS Word Document. You
can download Free Acrobat Reader. Also you can download cute pdf to convert
any document, make sure don't forgot to download cute converters also. You
need Optical Recognition Software to read your word scan. That's why when you
scanning your application is not converting exactly what you have because
your system doesn't have Optical Recognition Software installed.
