More problems with Database Sharing !!

I have BCM installed on my laptop which runs windows XP professional and have
built up a load of accounts and contacts.

I now want to connect a desktop computer but I also want the database file
to be stored and managed from that computer.

The desktop computer has windows 2000 SP4. I successfully installed BCM and
created a new database. I then exported a BCM data file from my laptop with
all the accounts and contact info and imported into the new database on the
desktop. All good so far…

The system seemed to be working fine, all the contacts and info could be
viewed and managed from either computer and any changes made on one computer
immediately showed up on the other. So job done, at the end of the day I shut
down both computers and went home a happy man.

The next day I started up both computers and opened outlook on my laptop.
After some waiting it finally came up with the error message ‘cannot connect
to database….’ I’ve gone through several help files checked subnet mask,
firewalls etc but I have two main questions:

Does it matter that the desktop is running Windows 2000? And…

Why did it work the first day and suddenly decide to stop working when I
next booted up?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated

Symptoms - BCM database not accessible from laptop. Is it accessible from
the desktop?

Did you actually set laptop to use the BCM database on the desktop in the
Data File management screen?

Make sure MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ (or MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM) service is running
on the 2000 desktop.
Start -> Run -> services.msc [OK]
Start -> Run -> svrnetcn [OK]
Verify that named pipes and TCP/IP are enabled for the service, and restart
the service if necessary

HI Leonid,

Yes the database is accessible from the deskop.

Yes the laptop is set to use the desktop databse in the Data file management
screen, as it did work properly on the first day.

Thanks so much for your input

Hi Lex

Can you try the following article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901164/en-us

looks like you have already tried some steps already mentioned in the
same,try
using the OSQL command mentioned and see if you can access the database

This sounds a little strange. Perhaps you would like to remove the BCM data
from the laptop and attempt to reconnect to the desktop so that specific
error messages would become visible. I want to eliminate the cached
credentials effect by doing this.

It sounds like like a personal firewall problem. I could take a 5-minute
look at this I suppose. :-)

Ideally, I'd want to try creating a DSN in ODBCAD32 (pretty easy - you run
ODBCAD32, click Add, choose the SQL Server driver [typically listed on the
very bottom], and connect to the DESKTOPNAME\MicrosoftBcm or
DESKTOPNAME\MicrosoftSmlBiz - if successful, it'll let you proceed. If not,
well nothing will work anyway)
