StanLee - 07 Apr 2006 13:51 GMT Ok. So I scheduled a reminder to backup my BCM manually once every two weeks. I did this after I had backed it up before. But now... I don't have the menu selection for File, Business Database... so what could have happened to it.

I do not have "Business Contact manager" as a selection... not on the menu... or on the dialogue box. I checked for updates...and that says everything is current... so you must be talking about "versions" vs 'updates'. Thanks, I think.... for the point in this direction...

If you dont have BCM under help about then it mean you dont have it associated with the Outlook profile.Go to file > data file management > click on add and add BCM

I checked 'settings' and made sure it was going there as well.. btw... thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

StanLee - 07 Apr 2006 23:03 GMT Thanks again Raul. Here is what I wound up doing...and everything appears to be back in order.
1. I also run BCM Mobile, and had installed HP's Credant Protect tools on my iPAQ 6515. Everysince then, things have been pretty funky with MS ActiveSync, SOTI Pocket Professional, Media Player, and in general the whole dang phone/iPAQ. 2. I had tried to uninstall the HP Protect tools right after I installed them, but it didn't unistall completely. It was immediately "out of memory" even though the iPAQ store shows 9 out or 12MB free, the 1GB miniSD card has 496MB free..and the 1GB SD card showed 253 MB Free. Today.... I forced myself to backup and uninstall...then hard reset the mobile. 3. I reinstalled Outlook BCM to the local machine via Add/Remove and "change" buttons. 4. After finishing that, I restarted the machine....just for safe measure. When Outlook Ran, it did some maintenance work (reindexing I supposet... I didn't watch it) 5. I then checked the Database Management tools... everything is there again.. 6. I checked the BCM Mobile... all contacts are still there as well.
So...... that's the deal. And thanks to you pointing me in the right direction.... I was able to get this done. I really appreciate it.
My goal is to attempt and use BCM/Outlook to report 'Billable Hours" to the Microsoft Small Business Accounting software....for billing purposes. Integration with Sharepoint is working already...and am playing with OfficeLive as well. It's a wonderful life...:-) If you have any other pointers concerning the above stuff.... point me towards your blog/site! If you want to 'play' as well... just reply with "Put me in coach... I wanna play!" and we'll go from there!!! Again... I cannot thank you enough for the point in the right direction... you really saved me some time on this.

StanLee - 09 Apr 2006 13:11 GMT This has not been resolved entirely... this is a new observation to this issue, and perhaps someone can better explain.
After sitting idle for an undetermined period of time (overnight perhaps), when I run outlook (which had NOT been closed)...the "Buiness Database\Other Menus" was no longer in the 'File\etc" menu. It's NOT that the Menu isn't expanded... it simply isn't there. Once I exited Outlook and restarted the '$sqletc" services..then restarted Outlook... the "Business Database\Other Menus" were there. The handheld device HAD been on and off several times during this time. Any ideas?

With regrad to the SBA question try the following link https://blogs.msdn.com/rajattaneja/default.aspx and the below link might provide you some insight since you stated that hand held was switched on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839685/en-us If the issue reoccurs might be a problem with SQL
Hope this helps

StanLee - 11 Apr 2006 17:15 GMT Raul, Something else you can put in that big helpful knowledgebase of yours...
When the situation as we have been disussing occurs... the ability to use the Journal time tracking feature is not available in Outlook in regards to the BCM contacts... because the database isn't available. Makes sense that it wouldn't be, since it's gone down the tubes until restarted... just FYI... Thsnks for all your help.

Like Stan Lee, my "Business Database/other menus" has disappeared, along with the "Backup" command.
I've tried the database maintenance ideas but nothing has worked. I have backed-up my business contacts monthly over the past year and now .... nothing?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Greg

My issues are more related to that than anything else, at least that's what I figure. Also... from #3 on my post earlier worked for me...

Thanks for the response. No my issue does not involve a mobile device, just this PC.
What I'm curious about is how you reinstalled and/or changed Outlook BCM. I'm afraid that if I do that I run the risk of losing my contacts - which, of course is why I'm trying to backup them up.
In the worst case, I could import from previously backed-up files, but that data is already more than 10% out-of-date and the purging of bounced links is a hassle I'd rather avoid.
Cheers
Greg

You're not going to believe this...
I mentioned yesterday that I did try the database maintenance function but nothing changed, even after a restart.
A cooleague today emailed me a large Excel attachment, which I opened. In Excel I tried to open another Excell file as I needed to import a column or two. When I hit the 'open file' button everything froze.
I did 'contol alt delete' and in task master closed the Excel files that were 'not responding'. Apparently this shut down Outlook as well (since it was an attachment). When I restarted Outlook I got a message box that said, "not shut down properly etc.'
When it came up, on a hunch, I went to BCM and 'file' and lo and behold there was the 'business database' function and all the sub functions, including 'backup'. Which I immediately did, sucessfully.
Who do I thank for this, the Easter bunny?
Regards,
Greg

StanLee - 14 Apr 2006 13:05 GMT Sorry I didn't see reply to your post yesterday. I wasn't in a position to do much at all yesterday rather than meet/greet new customers at the Business Expo! (not complaining) Anyway... WHEN (notice I didn't say "if") they go away again... try closing Outlook, then ctrl-alt-del and kill the "outlook.exe' task if it's running. If it's not... then go to services and restart the $sqlblahblah... service. Then run Outlook again. I'll bet they come back again. see the <snip> from my earlier post... <snip> Once I exited Outlook and restarted the '$sqletc" services..then restarted Outlook... the "Business Database\Other Menus" were there. The handheld device HAD been on and off several times during this time. </snip>
As far as reinstalling Outlook... I just reinstalled it to it's original state. It didn't overwrite my contacts, but I didn't figure it would. There may have been some other selection in that reinstall process that asked me, but if there was...I don't remember it.

I've lost my backup function again and can't replicate the fluke that restored it the last time.
Could you please be more specific about where I can find the "$sqlblahblah... service" that you refer to.
Thanks

StanLee - 16 Jun 2006 21:43 GMT No Problem... Go to Control Panel. then Adminitrative Tools. Then click on "Services"... This is a list of the services currently running on your machine. You should see one called MSSQLXXXBlahBlah (probably smlbiz or something like that. Right click on the service and tell it to "restart"... that should do it...

I have the same problem of menus and other functions (very annoying: the import/export function) disappearing.
I didn't try all the possible fixes mentioned in this thread, in part because I'm not a computer wiz and for example don't know how to "restart the 'sqletc'" services, but I found that the BCM was actually disabled in the "About Microsoft Outlook > Disabled items" menu (as Raul mentioned in his last e-mail of 4/7/2006).
After activating it, I now get an error message when starting Outlook labeled BCM "Impossible to execute the operation. Impossible to find an object." (or something similar. I'm running this on a French system.) ... and the BCM menus and commands are still not there.
Does anybody have an experience with this problem now at the end of 2007?
I suspect that some aspects of the BCM have changed with an update. An indicator for this is that the data file of a BCM database has changed.
Any help is much appreciated!
