When I need to stop a recurring meeting in Outlook, I have to delete the
series, which deletes that meeting in the past, present and future.  If I
want a meeting to stop on January 18 and no long meet perpetually, I have to
delete each meeting separately.  I would like for Microsoft Outlook to
develop a way to choose to delete recurring meetings by prompting to delete
"this one occurrence" or "all future occurrences."  This method is used by
the Lotus Organizer and is a lot more user-friendly than the Outlook
presentation.

Open the series of the recurring meeting, then click Recurrence button and change the end date.

the problem with this method is it rewrites all past appointments so it is
terribly disrespectful of my data

hello bill, have a look at ws:repeat appointment II at www.websetters.co.uk.
i have recently moved to that for the reason you cite. unfortunately it
doesn't help for existing recurrence appointments.
