I have Outlook 2003 and recently a number one " (1) " appeared just to the
right of the word Calendar in the My Calenders section of the Navigation
Pane.  Can anyone explain what this is and how to get rid of it?

it indicates you have an unread item (probably a meeting request). Right
click on the folder and choose mark all as read or use a table view and look
for it.
