is there a way to create a calendar such that i can give it to someone via
email or disk and have them open it on their computer with their version of
outlook (so that they can further edit it)?

Export your calendar to a .pst file and copy that to the thumb drive - give
it to the other person and direct them to Open it, not import it.

After furious head scratching, phar77 asked:

o.k., tried that.  went to "export", selected "to a file", then ".pst", then
from the folder list, selected the calendar i created under "calendar".
saved it to a location.  then, tried to open it (double-click, choose
program, etc.)  error message came up: operation failed.  then tried outlook,
file, open, outlook data file and pointed to location of the file.  nothing
there but an empty personal folder, not the calendar i saved.  any thoughts?
