Display contact names on calendar

How do I display the contact name on the calendar when scheduling
appointments? Do I have to retype who I am meeting with in the subject?

You can do it that way or you can link the appointment to a contact using
the option at the bottom of the appointment item.

I see that I can attach the contact name at the bottom of the appointment
item, but how do I show the contact name on the calendar itself without
having to open the appointment item?

You would need to add it to the appointment title - no other way around it
currently.
