I would like outlook 2003 to give equal space and emphasis to Saturday /
Sunday as to other days of the week. I went to Tools -- calendar preferences
etc and checked the 7 day boxes but it does not work

Did you look at the option about including weekends in the print dialog?
What view are you trying to print?  Work week or monthly?
