I have recently changed from Outlook Express to Outlook in order to get the
additional  versatility. I notice that the day of the week does not appear
next to the date on the bar at the top of the page. The day of the week
appears only on the "month view" so if you are on the daily view and need to
make an appointment on a given day you need to know the date. Is there a way
to fix this?

Control Panel->Regional Options.  Set your preferred Long Date Format there.
If you use the mmmm dddd yyyy, the complete date displays, including the
full day name.
