I have created an alternate calendar that shows under
'My Calendars', and displays side-by-side (with the main
calendar) when checked.
However it needs to be checked each time I start Outlook.
Is there a way to have it checked by default?

Yeah, it would be nice for views to persist from session to session, but
alas.
