Calendar Automatic Formatting Crashes Outlook 2003

I recently upgraded from Office 2000 to Office 2003.  I can no longer add new
Automatic Formatting items to Outlook.  I converted my97-2002 .pst files to
2003.  My old .pst had about  10 auto formats.  My new .pst has none and when
I try to add one and hit OK, Outlook crashes (I have sent about 100 error
reports today).  What could be causing this?  I think I have seen somewhere
that there is a limit of 30 auto formats.  Is that 30 ever in every .pst you
have ever created??!!!

I cannot even create 1 in the new .pst file and I cannot create new ones in
my old .pst now either.  In fact, just opening Automatic Formating and
hitting Cancel now crashes Outlook.  This is very frustrating.

Any suggestions on what to do?  I don't want to uninstall and reinstall
Outlook (or Office 2003) unless someone really knows why that will fix
whatever the problem is - and not just try this - it might work.

Thanks for any help
Bev

autoformatting is in a View - they are not exported when you convert pst
formats, that's why they are gone. Try restarting Outlook with the
cleanviews switch - at start menu run, type
outlook.exe /cleanviews

Thanks for the response.  /cleanviews did not work.  Trying to add an auto
format causes Outlook to crash.  This still occurs in both old .pst (97-2002)
and new (2003).  Even cancelling out of the Autoformat screen crashes
Outlook.  If I uninstall, reboot, reinstall Outlook will it clear out
whatever registry setting is likely causing this?  I already ran an Office
2003 Repair (but not a reinstall) with no luck.

Thanks again - hoping you have another suggestion!!

No, it's unlikely uninstall will fix it.

other things to try:
start outlook with the /safe switch - does it work?
Start menu, run - type
outlook.exe /safe

and then with /safe:4

(these switches are explained at
http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/commandlines.htm#safe)

THANKS!  /safe worked.  So do I always have to open Outlook with /safe or can
I use the regular ways?

I really do appreciate your help on this - it was driving me crazy.  I will
bookmark you site - looks great if you make sure you know the implications of
some of the switches.  Thanks

Safe tells us it's a configuration problem -  now you need to figure out
which thing is causing the problem. Try the other safe switches, beginning
with safe:4 - if that works, delete outcmd.dat (at C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook). If it doesn't work,
try each of the other safe switches and let us know which one works so that
we can advise on what file is the problem. I suspect safe:4 is the one
though. :)

OK - this is great.  safe:4 worked, so I renamed outcmd.dat and reopened
Outlook and it seems to be working just fine.  I truly appreciate your help.
Do you know how this problem happens?  This computer is old and I have
upgraded OS and Office multiple times.

Anything else I should do or is it ok now?
Thanks tons - have a great weekend.

all we know is the outcmd.dat file gets corrupted. It holds toolbar
customizations and when you have problems with tools and menus, it may be
the culprit.

it should be ok now - it's possible an upgrade made it flaky but there are
other unknown causes.

I'm having this same problem!  It's with Outlook 2003, SP1, and all the
current updates available as of today.  We use an Exchange server on our
network.

/safe works, however /safe:4 does NOT.  There is no outcmd.dat file either,
just outlook.srs , outlook.NK2 and outlook.xml .. deleted all these files so
the directory was clean, still doesn't work unless in /safe mode.

Any ideas?
