Are these appointments in the defaul calendar folder in the default mail
store (the set of folders where your e-mail is delivered)?

They are. I tried the other suggestions that were in similar requests
(laoding Outlook with the "cleanreminders" switch (I can't find it right now
so I'm guessing, but it was a switch) and now I get a message bubble at the
task bar that says something like unable to load (maybe display?) the
reminders. It is weird because they have always worked until recently. Is
it possible that there have been too many reminders and something is full??
I've been using Outlook for a long time.

Are you using a .PST file? If so, try running the Inbox Repair Tool against
it to see if it finds any errors. Search your drive for a file called
scanpst.exe and run it. Allow the program to make a backup of your file
before it makes any changes.
