Meeting Request Response Addressed Incorrectly

We are using Outlook 2003 without Exchange server.  (We are using WorkGroup
Share to share calendars, contact lists and free/busy information but this
problem was duplicated between two machines without WorkGroup Share installed.
)

The scenario is as follows:

When a user sends meeting requests, they arrive with the Accept, Decline etc
buttons intact.  When a recipient of the request responds using the button,
the response does not get back to the sender because it is addressed with an
incomplete email address.

Let's say UserA sends a meeting request to several users.  His email address
is usera@company.com.  One of the recipients is UserB who has userb@company.
com as his email address.  When UserB accepts, the response email bounces.
Even though the request email shows it came from usera@company.com, the
bounce message says it is an incomplete address and contains only usera and
not the full email address.

Text of an actual bounce message follows:

The original message was received Fri, 04 Nov 2005 09:49:37 -0800 from
dmessmer

  ----- The following address(es) had permanent fatal errors ----- <jdavis>;
originally to jdavis (unrecoverable error)
The mail system encountered a delivery failure, code -3.
This failure could be due to circumstances out of its control,
please check the transcript for details
----- Transcript of session follows ----- The calendar item requested
does not exist.

In this case usera is jdavis

The bounce message also contains a Details.txt file whose contents are:

Reporting-MTA: dns; Tehama.k12.ca.us
Arrival-Date: Fri, 04 Nov 2005 09:49:37 -0800

Original-Recipient: jdavis
Final-Recipient: jdavis
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you don't have the users full email address entered somewhere - if you
needed to add it to workgroup share, look there first.

The user's full email address is in the Contacts folder and in the Workgroup
Share client setup.  That is how we get the free/busy information.  But this
scenario was also duplicated between two users computers without Workgroup
Share installed which tells us it is an Outlook issue.  I also tried
explicitly adding the full reply address to the properties for the users
email account and this did not help either.  It acts like it is looking for
an IMAP mailbox, which as I understand is username only instead of an
SMTP/POP3 mailbox which is username@domainname.

Can this be done without an Exchange server?

Thanks.

full reply address is always user@domain.com, even in imap. only the account
information used during log on may not require the domain, depending on the
mail server.

The logon information is the only place that the username is listed without
the rest of the complete email address.  Any ideas why the response would be
addressed to the username only?

you'll need to check with the workgroup share people.

We duplicated this exact same behavior on two computers that do not have
Workgroup Share installed.  This is not a Workgroup Share client issue.  It
is an Outlook 2003 issue.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Did you test it with another mail server? Are all recipients in the same
domain? Outlook uses the address in the account setup when it send email -
if that is the full and correct SMTP address then the SMTP server could be
stripping the domain off (not uncommon when all are on the same domain)

Yes, we did test it with another mail server.  When we issue a request from a
user on our mail server to someone on an outside mail server, we get the same
result.  When a user on an outside mail server issues a request to a user on
our mail server, the response is returned correctly.  Normally all of the
recipients will be in the same domain.  This seems to suggest that the
request is not formulated correctly.  Maybe this is why the bounce message
contains the "The calendar item requested does not exist" message from the
server.

As near as I can tell, our mail server is running NettMail SMTP Agent
$Revision: 1.5 $ on Novell NetWare.  I do not control our mail server and
have limited influence over changes to its configuration.  I am about ready
to advise my boss to just send emails - not meeting requests -- and call it
good unless someone has any other suggestions.

Thanks for your time.
