When I try to save a new appointment, it gives me an error message, "could
not save item"  Outlook 2003 will save new contacts, and I've also tried
closing and rebooting..also archived.

Are you using a pst-file? Scanned it for errors with scanpst.exe already?
Also are you using synchronisation software to synch your Calendar to a PDA
or something? Close Outlook (check that the outlook.exe process stops as
well) and load Outlook in safe mode;
Start-> Run; "path to outlook.exe" /safe

See if it works now.
