Can I change the background color of a specific date in the monthly view
inorder to highlight important events

 You could put an All day Event on the day, label it a colour (show time as
Free) and that would make it more obvious.

 Change your labels to be more meaningful to you.

I don't think you can change the color of one day's background.  If you want
the event colored, use one of the colors in the "Label" field.
