I use Outlook Calendar as my diary and wish to ensure that all my
appointments are permanent history aalong with notes in the entry.

Why do you think they won't be?  If you disable autoarchive on the calendar,
then nothing should ever get removed.  Of course, you may still run into the
64K item limit for the folder.
