For some unknown reason Outlook displays the date twice on each day. I would
appreciate if anyone can tell me how to get this back to the default display
of just one date on each day. I know it sounds crazy but its happened!

Control Panel->Regional Settings.  Check how you have your dates displayed
there.

Do you have the "Enable alternate calendar" option selected here: Tools menu
> Options > Calendar

Thanks Vince, appreciate your help. I have no idea how that changed as I heve
never been near this area before.
Thanks a lot.
