when I put a new appointment into my outlook calendar and set a reminder a
box comes up and says The reminder for "xxx whatever I name the reminder"
will not appear becuase the item is not in your calendar or task folder. is
this ok.

The problem is its not ok i want appointment reminders to pop up like they
are supposed to but its not happening. And I dont know how to fix the issue.
I have done the detect and repair, I have tried creating new calenendars all
to no avail. can any one help me resolve this issue.

Is the folder that these items in actually the Calendar folder (not some
other calendar-type folder)? I don't think I've seen Outlook fire off that
message when you're entering items in the Calendar folder in your default
message store.
