Can not delete Outlook reminder

I set a date in my MS Outlook calendar a few weeks ago. However every time I
start Outlook it comes up with the reminder about this calendar date even
though I think the date has been deleted in the calandar.

If you press dismiss it will say 'Cannot turn off the reminder. You may be
reminded again. Could not complete the operation. One or more parameter
values are not valid'.

How can I stop this happening?

Try starting Outlook once with the /cleanreminders command line switch.  If
you don't know how, click Help and enter "command line" in the search.
