There is a (1) beside my Calendar icon. For other folders, I interperet this
number as unread messages, but this meaning makes no sense with the Calendar
icon. I have checked all my appointments, and can find nothing wrong. Help!
What does it mean?

As you say, it means an unread item.  Right-click and choose Mark All as
Read.  I really don't know what causes unread items in a calendar.

The most common reason is calendar items added from a web page.
