I almost always have 1 hour appointments. Having to adjust EVERY appointment
is annoying

Select the range prior to clicking New and the start and end times will
correspond to the selected range.

Becasue I'm scheduling appointments months away, I operate in Month view. I
double click on the date box to open a new appointment item. If I'm
understanding your suggestion --would be in day/week view--adds yet another
step for me.

If you double-click on a day in Month view, you'll get an all-day event, so
I must not understand exactly what you mean.
