If there is a daily, repeating, all day event, it sometimes merges to one
long bar that displays across several days.  Is there a setting to make it
display is an individual box in each day?

No, except to make them non-all-day events.  Shorten the event by a few
minutes.

If it appears as one long occurence, then that usually means that the event was set to run over several days when it was created.  Using the meeting item and setting it to all day, then set the recurrence will normally give you daily blocks.  Using the meeting item and setting the appointment to all day but spanning the days in the appointment window, not using the recurrence option will give you the one long event.
